Weekly Quote

When man invented the bicycle he reached the peak of his attainments.  Here was a machine of precision and balance for the convenience of man.  And (unlike subsequent inventions for man's convenience) the more he used it, the fitter his body became.  Here, for once, was a product of man's brain that was entirely beneficial to those who used it, and of no harm or irritation to others.  Progress should have stopped when man invented the bicycle.  ~Elizabeth West, Hovel in the Hills

American East Coast to Invade the World Rowing Scene

As the World readies for the East Coat’s arrival in Munich clubs are doing there best to keep athletes from maxing their credit cards to fund the very pricy trip. The following are fundraising parties scheduled for the next few days. If you are in the area stop on by, meet the athletes and donate what you can to these very special people. Remember all of the boats listed below receive virtually no assistance from US Rowing. They are self funded, largely self trained, and depend largely on their clubs and people like you to help them finance the logistics of their dreams.

  • Tonight at 6 PM at the Riverside boat club in Boston, Mass. Will be having a fundraiser to help the Men’s Lightweight 8+ raise money for their trip to Munich. This will be the second year in a row that Riverside will be sending a lightweight eight to World Championships. Last year, they finished 5th in this event, and will be hoping for the medals dock on August 26-Septemeber 2nd. The club is located at: 769 Memorial Drive Cambridge, MA 02139. If you can’t make the event, you can donate online at: http://www.firstgiving.com/riversideLM8 . The light men’s eight is coxed by Leigh Heyman, Stroked by Will Daly, who is competently backed by, John Nichols, Andrew Diebold, Jeff Forrester, Greg Ruckman, Tyler Resch, Gavin Frase, and Tim Larson.

  • Vesper Boat Club will be representing the U.S. in the Women’s Lightweight Quad this year, and the light double. Because the women’s lightweight quad is a non-olympic event and receives no aid from US Rowing they will need help paying for the trip to Munich. Former Dad Vail Silver medalist, Carey Brezler set’s the rhythm for this boat and is backed by, former Radcliffe Grad and NYAC rower Sarah Bates, former Colby Oarswoman, Margaret Duggan, and a 2005 Lightweight Canadian Henley Quad Champion, Hannah Moore, who makes the calls from bow. Please RSVP to Tony Schnieder at tony@glenville.com.

  • Undine Barge Club located at; #13 Boathouse Row, Kelly Drive Philadelphia, PA 19130, will be having a catered party to help the men’s lightweight quad afford the trip to World Championships on Friday August 16th beginning at 6:00 PM. If you are in Philadelphia, stroll by beautiful Undine Barge club to make a donation to these incredible athletes. This will be the first time that Undine will represent a boat in this event since 2001. This boat is stroked by former Macalester rower; Daniel Urevick-Ackelsberg, Oklahoma's own, Cody Lowry, former 2001 intermediate lightweight single champion, Jon D’Alba, and left coaster, Sam Saylor. If you can’t make it but still want to donate please send checks to Stan Freed at Undine Barge Club, P.O. Box 30236, Philadelphia, PA 19103.

  • Steve Kasprzyk, Pat Godfrey and coxswain Dave Florio will represent Penn AC and the United States in the coxed pair, with Luke Agnini as coach. Ivan Baldytchev will do the same in the lightweight single, coached by Andy Medcalf. Head on down to Penn AC Rowing club located at: 12 Boathouse Row Philadelphia, PA 19103. $20 will buy you food provided by Chuck Crawford and Pete Howey and ample merry juice provided by Jon Hogan’s ever giving Mariner Insurance Group.

All of these boats need your help. They have trained through cold winters, rowed thousands of miles, lifted tons of weight, and have achieved the premium in our sport, they have funded every stroke of their training out of their own pocket, let’s help fund their dreams for them.
