5 American Crews will Travel to Amsterdam for the 2nd World Cup

5 American Crews will Travel to Amsterdam for the 2nd World Cup stop to compete in the Men’s 1x, Men’s 2x, Women’s LW2x, Men’s LW2x, and Men’s 4x.
The men’s LW2x have not officially rowed the time standard and could look to do so at this gorgeous course. If they can row time standard here, or finish in the top 6 they will lock up the qualification requirements for World Championships and can avoid racing in an open trial later this year so it will be an important race for them. With very fast crews from Great Britain, Denmark, France, and Austria, making the “A” final would be a very good result.
American racing fans will also be very interested to see how the LW2x of Wendy Tripician (Campenella) and Jana Heere will fare at this regatta. The former duo of Renee Hykel and Julia Nichols set a high standard by winning bronze at Lucerne last year, but lost their trial to the Vesper double earlier this year. Tripician/Heere have already met the minimal requirements and will represent the U.S. in the LW2x at this years World Championships, regardless of the outcome next weekend. However, if they are thinking about the Olympics, this will be an important first step.
The Men's 4x of Shane O'Mara, Mark Flickinger, Michael Perry, and Sloan Du Ross will travel to Amsterdam this weekend as well. While the second 4x of Franis Cuddy, Deaglan Mceachern, Jamie Schroeder, and Warren Anderson will compete domestically at the USRowing National Championships. I get the impression that spots in the 4x may still be in flux so both of these boats will be racing hard to earn a spot in the first boat. The outcome of these two regattas may play a big role in deciding what the final lineup may be.
The men's 2x of Matt Hughes and Sam Stitt will head to Amsterdam this weekend to compete in one of the toughest international sculling events. In order to find a U.S. crew that has medaled at World Championships in this event we have to look back over 30 years to John van Blom and Thomas McKibbon who medaled in the 1970 World Championships. The infamous Enquis/Lewis double was the last to win a medal at the Olympics in 1984, and the Henry Nuzum/Aquil Abdullah came out of no where to qualify for the final in 2004. This double has yet to show what they can really do, but rest assured they will be tested at this regatta.
John Burns, a Vesper boat club alum will represent the U.S. in the Heavy Men's 1x. He will be hoping to make an impression on Head Sculling Coach Kris Korzeniowski in an effort to contest a spot on a World Championship Crew later this year.
