Weekly Quote

When man invented the bicycle he reached the peak of his attainments.  Here was a machine of precision and balance for the convenience of man.  And (unlike subsequent inventions for man's convenience) the more he used it, the fitter his body became.  Here, for once, was a product of man's brain that was entirely beneficial to those who used it, and of no harm or irritation to others.  Progress should have stopped when man invented the bicycle.  ~Elizabeth West, Hovel in the Hills

Thank you...

We have really enjoyed generating discussion about the status of American Rowing today and hope that productive discussions on lightweight rowing, diversity within the sport and the addition of sculling to collegiate regattas continues, however, we will be taking a temporary hiatus from the blog. We can no longer donate sufficient time to providing the quality posts you are accustomed to. We will be back, so visit us in a few months, but for now thank you for reading and we'll see you at the regattas.

World Championships Wrapped up...

As another World Championship regatta is entered into the history books all eyes turn firmly to the 2008 Olympics in Bejing. The U.S. has already qualified 11 boats with 43 athletes for next years Olympic Games. The boats that are guaranteed to represent the U.S. next year are: M2-, M2x, M4-, M4x, M8+, LM4-, W1x, W2-, W2x, W4x, and W8+. These boats have met the Olympic qualification requirements and will represent the United States next year.

The following boats have not met the qualification requirements for Beijing: M1x, LM2x, and LW2x. Although they have not been eliminated, their road will be that much tougher. The first qualifier will be the National Selection regatta at the end of April. If racers win here they will earn the opportunity to compete in the first or second (their choice) World Cup regatta where they can lock up their spot on the 2008 Olympic team with an exceptional performance.

If these applicants fail to qualify at a World Cup regatta they must come back to the U.S. to race in an Olympic Trail where they must win their event, and meet the minimal time requirement.
